JOHANNESBURG – The North West reported its first COVID-19 death.

The number of fatalities rose by 12 to reach 206.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize released the latest numbers on Monday afternoon during a visit to the Eastern Cape.

The minister said eight deaths were reported in the Western Cape, two in the Eastern Cape, one in KwaZulu-Natal and one in the North West.

A total of 10,652 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in South Africa.

Mkhize said about 8 million people have been screened countrywide.

The number of recoveries now stand at 4,357.

South Africa is the worst-hit country in sub-Saharan Africa.

Since 1 May, the government has gradually eased the confinement measures put in place in late March to stem the spread of the virus.
