Former Finance Minister Biti Calls For An Audit Of All Coronavirus Donations

MDC vice president and former Finance Minister Tendai Biti said that the government should facilitate an audit of all donations made towards the fight against the novel coronavirus.

Biti made the remarks while addressing an online meeting organised by the Zimbabwe Coalition of Debt and Development (ZIMCODD) on Saturday. He said:

We have struggled to deal with corruption in Zimbabwe for quite some time now and it is in the best interest of everyone for the government to quickly audit all donations contributed towards Covid-19 as soon as the pandemic is over.

Biti warned that the suspension of Parliament during the national lockdown was also a breeding ground for corruption. He said:

Since January this year at least 103 statutory instruments have been issued in relation Covid-19 and as a trained lawyer I am still battling to understand a plethora of these unclear instruments.

Parliament is the only institution that is allowed to make laws in this country, and its suspension during a state of disaster is catastrophic.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has assured the nation that all donations will be accounted for but there are concerns that some people in government or with connections to the government will abuse the donations for personal gain.
